well, i too would rather live without junk mail and advertising...
but - personal experience - i have been running 3-6 listservs on
topica for the past 3 years, and haven't experienced a flood of
junkmail as a result, at least not to the two addresses which are
subscribed to topica... all of the junkmail i get comes to my
university address passing through a server that presumably runs
spamguard... go figure...

as a matter of principle, however, i'd support moving to a
non-commercial server, if there is such a thing out there...
