hi all,
i'm a software designer and media theorist. my work primarily concerns
the design and theorization of interfaces and visualizations for online,
public, very large-scale conversations (vlsc) and collaborations. my
conversation map software is the work i am best known for (see
www.sims.berkeley.edu/~sack/cm). my projects right now concern (1) the
design and articulation of tools and theories of online, democratic
discourse; and, (2) ethnographies and graphical, "social navigation"
interfaces for open source software development projects. i did my grad
work at the mit media lab and i teach now at the department of film and
digital media at the university of california, santa cruz. with respect
to the subject of this discussion i co-chaired (with tom erickson and
susan herring) a workshop on "discourse architectures" at last year's
computer-human interaction (chi) conference.
