| Hi everyone I'm very interested in this topic and delighted that Geert and Trebor are making this happen both virtually and in physical space. The trAce Online Writing Centre has been providing a community for writers working on the web since 1995. Our stats show that we get around 25k hits a day and have users in 111 countries at the latest count. We run online courses in writing and new media, and manage a range of online projects for clients like the British Council and others. We also do research into the way writers work with computers and new media. So we've got a lot of experience of online interactivity in a very international sense. However, although we run a lot of 'collaborative' projects, they have never been as democratically collaborative as they might be, and I think there are quite a few reasons for that. One is certainly platform and functionality. Another is that although a lot of writers know how to use the web they are not always so experienced in the interactive community side, and of course all the skills used for teaching and hosting community online are very similar to those used for collaboration. So, we have ended up with a number of rather nice projects like the Noon Quilt http://trace.ntu.ac.uk/quilt/ or Alan Sondheim's Lost http://trace.ntu.ac.uk/lost/ which are very successful but could certainly have been much more interactive if we'd had the right software at the time, for example. We are applying for funding to set up a research project into online collaboration and if we're successful we will be starting the project in Sept 04, so FreeCooperation comes at exactly the right time for us. I'd certainly like to be involved in the conference and look forward to hearing from other members of this list with regard to their projects and interests. best wishes Sue Sue Thomas Artistic Director trAce Online Writing Centre Nottingham Trent University, UK http://trace.ntu.ac.uk/ |
