| Dear List, I enjoyed Charles Green's posting (in response to Brian's Tate paper). I might be a bit cautious about reducing the idea of politically committed art practice to a choice between Stalinism and the charitable embrace of the Tate Modern. It's also useful to recall that T.J. Clark has, in recent years, discovered his inner Greenberg. However, Charles (if I might be so informal) provides a useful and provocative critique of avant-gardist practices. I'm not quite clear on his discussion of collaboration as a "bookkeeping" relationship vis. a vis. difference. Perhaps he can elaborate a bit on this? Also, does anyone know if any of Eve Chiapello's work (on the "decorative" function of avant-garde resistance) is available yet in English translation? Perhaps her paper at the Tate conference? Best wishes, Grant Kester |
